OUR HISTORY
PORIRUA COLLEGE
was established in 1968 and has a great
history as the co-educational, multi–cultural school which proudly and capably
serves its local area and has been doing so for nearly 40 years. The school
takes students from year 9 to years 13/14 and also has a separate adult class in
teaching English to speakers of other languages.
The school is located in Cannons Creek, Porirua
East and we have formed successful strategic partnerships over the years with
other local schools, and schools located in Auckland. We are a member of the
ICAN cluster of schools. Other ICAN schools are: Brandon Intermediate, Cannons
Creek, Natone
Park, Russell, Porirua East,
Glenview and Maraeroa schools. We are also a member of the AIMHI schools, which
is also a partnership with the Ministry of Education and eight Secondary schools
in Auckland. The AIMHI consortium
has been in existence for nine years now.
 |
We
have worked very hard on the first of the school wide aims which we adopted in
1997 – and that is to
create a culture of respect. We now have a school culture where
staff and students are proud of our school, and of where we come from; of the
people we have become and of the people we go to school with. We know we have
achieved this respect through feedback we have had and from the last two ERO
reports [2000 and 2004].
|
 |
We have a professional and dedicated staff
that has a good grounding in excellent teaching techniques to promote academic
learning. Our school has had extra professional development over the years for
our teachers, thanks to our involvement in the AIMHI and ICAN school clusters.
Our teachers have had more training than teachers in other schools in this
regard.
|
 |
We have improved our home/school links
by employing well respected Community Liaison officers, and by having a strong PTA and a Board of
Trustees which has committed parents serving the governance role for the school.
|
 |
We are proud to identify Porirua
College as a school that successfully caters for the teaching of home
languages for Maori and Pasifika students. Our languages policy received a
commendation from the Human Rights Commission in 2003, and the school is
developing its ability to help bilingual students maintain their first language
as well as learning English.

HERE’S WHAT ERO HAS TO
SAY ABOUT US:
“A culture of
respect is established in the College. The students demonstrate respect
and acceptance of each other and of staff. Their behaviour is positive and
they are fully aware of College rules and consequences. Students have
strong input into the corporate life of the College.”
Confirmed ERO
report, August 2000

“A positive
feature of the school is the extent of community support and participation
in the daily life of the college. The board and staff are committed to
involving the wider community in providing a safe and supportive learning
environment for students. There is a strong emphasis on promoting respect.
Students are welcoming, friendly and respectful.”
