PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves
and to tell you something about
Porirua College. Porirua
College is a well regarded state co-educational College catering for
students from years 9 – 13. We are currently the second largest secondary
school in the Porirua basin and the roll has continued to rise for the last
five years and we are now approaching 600 students.
The College opened in 1968 and is one of the S68 design
schools. In March of 2006 the Honourable Minster for Education, Steve
Maharey announced that the school would be completely rebuilt and this is
now well underway.
Since 1997
Porirua College has been in
a period of change and development. We have kept the enduring aspects of the
College – the traditions that have been well loved by our community - and we
have introduced innovation; and both have made
Porirua
College an excellent school, a school with vision and a school that has, and
that produces, people of integrity.
For myself, I come from an academic background, having taught
at various other schools before choosing to come to
Porirua College. I have
also spent time in the Ministry of Education seconded to the Curriculum
Division for a year, and I have been on the national executive of the NZPPTA.
In many years gone by
I completed my own schooling with the top marks in
New Zealand
in Scholarship English and History and was awarded a scholarship to Auckland
University for my first three years of tertiary education. I therefore
understand the importance of academic excellence at secondary school level
and of continuing to improve the learning outcomes for all students.
